Real Friend

A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest.
A real friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself

A simple friend has never seen you cry.
A real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears.

A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names.
A real friend has their phone numbers in his address book.

A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party.
A real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean.

A simple friend hates it when you call after they've gone to bed.
A real friend asks you why you took so long to call.

A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems.
A real friend seeks to help you with your problems.

A simple friend wonders about your romantic history.
A real friend could blackmail you with it. (I like this line)

A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument.
A real friend calls you after you had a fight.

A simple friend expects you to always be there for them.
A real friend expects to always be there for you!

I have far too much time while many of you sleep....

It is by chance we met,
by choice we became friends.
Friendship is a strange thing---
we find ourselves telling each other
the deepest details of our lives,
things we don't even share
with our families who raised us.
But what is a friend?
A confidant? A lover?
A fellow email junkie?
A shoulder to cry on?
An ear to listen?
A heart to feel?...
A friend is all these things...
and more.
No matter where we met,
I call you friend.
A word so small yet so large in feeling,
a word filled with emotion.

It is true great things
come in small packages.
Once the package of friendship
has been opened,
it can never be closed.
It is a constant book always written
waiting to be read and enjoyed.
We may have our disagreements,
we may argue,
we may concern one another,
friendship is a unique bond
that lasts through it all.

A part of me is put into my friends,
some it is my humor,
some it is my listening ear,
some it is real life experiences,
some it is my romanticism
but with all, it is friendship.

Friendships forged are a construct stronger
than steel built as a foundation,
necessary for life and necessary for love.
Friends----you and me
You brought another friend
and then there were 3.
We started our group
Our circle of friends
and like that circle
There is no beginning or end...

I rather like this post. reminds me of all the kindred spirits I've come across throughout my military career. you forgot one line though. " a friend asks you why you got arrested and bails you out, but a real friend is sitting there with you saying, "man...we fucked up." lol.

Nowhere is the difference between ‘real’ and ‘simple’ friends writ more large than here in cyberspace. Some collect them for the world to see, but if you find more than two or three real friends here you will be very lucky.

A simple friend slides silently away when darkness falls.
A real friend stands by your shoulder until the light returns.

Kimmie coco puff, have you ever actually talked about that line with friends? Get your closer friends together, the ones you really could end up anywhere with and ask them for the first lines you'd say to each others. Its very interesting and funny. My closest friend and I spent an hour or two laughing at the world, thinking about that one. To 'gee we'll really fucked up this time', 'what did you make us do?' to 'that was the most peaceful nights sleep we've had in years'.

Saffron, I am still probably neive, I feel lucky.
