A town called Goat.
My partner ordered more brandies, both he and Lily were positively beaming. So much so I felt I should have been nervous. 'Now we’re agreed,' he said. 'I have to go to Split, so if possible I would like you pair to go to Koper and then onto Trieste.' He laid some papers on the table 'and then you return and meet me in Split.' I looked at Lily…
‘Yes that’s doable she agreed………..Lily and I then went our separate ways to pack and agreed to meet an hour later.
Lily had organized a taxi and I had one last look at the city of wonderful, narrow romantic ally ways and streets and then sadly bid it farewell. For some reason the Harry Lime theme tune kept playing in my head.
It took us just over an hour to get to Koper or Goat’s Island as Lily called it. It was warm and after the brandies we slept most of the way. The sun was already low in the sky by the time we had found our hotel. Lily rang some friends and I left her to it and set out to explore.
Our hotel was close to the old town square The Loggia, presided over by a large clock tower.
There seemed to be few people about and I assumed they were all tackling their evening meal.
Once out of the old quarter Koper looked like anywhere else………
So I headed back inside the town walls. Here the streets were very narrow and even though in shade they managed to trap the heat of the day.
There were all the usual shops. I’m not sure what Akcija Do was but it had 50% off.
There were some interesting old wells in the Venetian style……
Outside the town walls the town was modern, well set out and very clean and tidy….
Here the trappings of modernity rubbed shoulders with the old Communist heros….
Women slid by on skates I could have been anywhere.
First and foremost Koper is Slovenia’s main port. The harbour is divided into various parts for commercial, leisure and fishing boats…
Most amusingly the local swimming pool was in the sea close to the commercial port. By now I was feeling hungry so I made my way back to my hotel to plan our meeting in the morning then our journey to Trieste… to be continued.
As a footnote. For anybody who is considering Slovenia for a holiday. It is clean, tidy, relatively crime free, has lots of history and has some incredible limestone scenery as well as Mediterranean and Alpine regions. As a holiday destination it warrants a good 8/10 and I have every intention of returning sometime for a week’s touring holiday.
The next episode in this series will be published in approximately 10 days time as I am off on my travels again.
