Thank you Jenny, for a lovely choice of new photo to work with.
I saw a single swan today
Swimming alone upon a pond
I always thought they traveled in pairs
That's how I've always seen them before.
She seemed so regal
Even on her own
Her neck curled, beak forward
But I sensed a sadness of her swim without her mate.
Searching the pond for another stray
Swimming alone upon a pond
I always thought they traveled in pairs
That's how I've always seen them before.
She seemed so regal
Even on her own
Her neck curled, beak forward
But I sensed a sadness of her swim without her mate.
Searching the pond for another stray
Wondering if she was in flight
Upon a nest
Surely such beautiful lovers cannot suffer tiffs.
My heart aches at such a thought
Even in a world where often little is right
Some things just are
Meant to be, have to be.
So I sat along the water's edge
Watching the calmness as she cut
Thought the water
No sign of effort or underlying propulsion.
Could it be will alone that moved her
Could that explain her composure
A sign of her strength
Or the certaintude her solitude was temporary?
I put my mind to work
Surely I could mimic
Surely I could learn
Closing my eyes I focused within.
I let my heart go free
My mind finally at peace
Opening my eyes
When I felt you take my hand.
Across the water
Directly in our vision
A silent ripple marks the empty surface
Two birds having taken wing.

Majesty and divinity alike,
Swans are known to have the two.
The ugly duckling,
And the crowned prince and princess.
Far off in the distance,
An observer peers,
With a bow and arrow.
He says,
I want to make love,
Not destroy.
He says,
I want to be a cupid’s pair,
Not it’s undoing.
He strings the bow through the arrow,
His eyes piercing the heart,
A pair of arrows,
Piercing this heart.
With steady hands,
And a pounding heart,
He lets his arrow go.
It sails through the wind,
It sails through the air,
It does not sail through the heart.
Instead,
Once again,
He destroys.
He is the undoing.

A Swan Named Sue
I was gliding
Years ago, on the slippery slope of youth
Back when ripples seemed so different
Than they did in years to come
By happenstance
We stumbled across each other
In the same pond, on the same day
Then the two of us promptly
Became joined at the hip
As one
A swan like me
Who understood, who related
Identical matched reflections
Merged us both beyond elated
It was the beginning
Of a long beautiful enduring friendship
A journey with each other like no other
Nor none since, had ever come
A swan named Sue
We both finished each others thoughts
We both started each other’s sentence
I stuck by her through tribulations
That left her overwrought
Just as she always came
To my same rescue
There were others, of course
Paddling in the same waters
Their endurance's loyal too
Yet the waters never seemed
To flow quite so royal blue
We laughed, we cried, we frolicked,
Eyes crinkling in the sun
We danced and sighed and loved,
And shared such joyous fun
We watched our feathers black
Sleek onyx, turn snow white
As through the years we aged
Each color of our flight
Perhaps we never soared
As majestic eagles do
But I don't think we could fly
More lovely than swans do
I'll really miss you Sue
Sweet voice singing in my ear;
Sparkling eyes and brightest smile,
Infectious laughter, boisterous cheer
I pray somehow these memories
Will help me to get through
And pave some way to quell the tears
That stream from losing you

Jenny: Your poem was really quite amazing :) And the picture as well, inspired a lot of thought.
Camille: Hugs, love your poem as well. Very touching and hit me right in the heart.
Such incredible talent and variety. I love the diverse way each of you has approached the subject. Each poem is telling me something quite different so I’m going to have to read each one several times………… poems are so revealing………. maybe that’s why I don’t write them? Well done everyone!
Awesome poems
Wow, wonderful and lovely poems Jas and Camille. So touching.
Thanks.
Great blog you have here well done everyone.
No words can quite express this writer's roadblock challenge. I'm touched and quite beside myself. Lovely writing everyone. It's the band aid much needed.
When I said last week that Dylan is one of the great poets of our times, I was referring to Bob Dylan, not Dylan Thomas. You girls rival both of them though in putting forth concepts easily understood by poetry challenged girls like me. I think "Bob" would love to have put some music, acoustic of course,to the words here and in past submissions, to mark some event in his life. Thanks Ladies!!!
Thank you Jasmin and Jenny for contributing your beautiful poems to our latest DWR challenge. Both were a true delight and honor to read. Thank you also to Saffron, Anonymous, Bosun, Kimmie & Sammie for taking time to read and offer us feedback. :)
