Yesterday I was working in one of my favourite English villages so I paused in my labours to grab a few photos for the Blog.
Today the village was busy as there was a special celebration taking place, but we will return to that later.
In some ways it is the quintessential English village so for foreign readers a quick tour might be in order.
No English village would be complete without the English village garden and at the moment with the risk of frost diminishing they are coming into their own.
English gardens are nothing if they aren’t eccentric and when it comes to gardens nothing need be thrown away even the gardener’s boots!
There’s a rustic simplicity about them that can be mistaken for overgrown but it’s all part of the bucolic charm.
Although I have to admit this was a new addition to the English garden for me!
There are of course plenty of cats sleeping or otherwise.
Sleeping horses too.....
Nothing stands still here and today the old school is closed.....
The post office was shut long ago too but the old Victorian post-box remains embedded in the wall.
However the Squire’s house is still there and the Squire’s family are still in residence, but have to open the house occasionally for bus-loads of old-dears to help make ends meet.
There’s of course a duck pond where once the local horses were brought to drink, but today only a handful of testosterone-charged ducks hold sway.
The younger ducks love to watch their father strutting his stuff.
The village is also home to what must be the ugliest sheep in Christendom, but that’s not why I brought you here………… all will be revealed in part two just make sure you are well dressed.
(to be continued)
