A new series inspired by Kimmie. This morning’s visitor to my garden is the British jay - a member of the crow family. She lives in the nearby wood and is rarely seen in my garden although they are often heard as they have a manic cackle, not unlike some of those strange women in Lit. For British birds jays are remarkably colourful (most indigenous birds are black or brown) The brilliant turquoise wing feather were much treasured by Victorian men and women who wore them in their hats. Today fishermen use them to make salmon flies.
