What's in a number?

Hoover became synonymous with vacuum cleaners and Singer with sewing machines but it always struck me as remarkable that a number could become synonymous with food I mean 57 is more an age! Heinz 57 is a shortened, popular form of the "57 Varieties" slogan of Pittsburgh's H. J. Heinz Company. In its early days, the company wanted to advertise the great number of choices of canned and bottled foods it offered for sale. Although the company had more than 60 products in 1892, the number 57 was chosen because the numbers "5" and "7" held special significance to Heinz. The number "5" was Henry John Heinz's lucky number and the number "7" was his wife's lucky number. The company now has more than 6,000 products. Prepared horseradish was their first product.

In Britain the company are synonymous with baked beans and tomato sauce but for years one on the top Academic books on Nutrition was the Heinz Handbook of Nutrition. (I’ve just discovered it still exists and is in its 9th Edn and available for free download on the web. It’s a serious book and its FREE. If you want to know the real facts behind human nutrition without all the homeopathic quackery the pill bashers peddle this free book might just be for you.)

Thank you for sharing what appears to be a great addition for the coffeeshop's book club, Saffron.
