Women in the news

Shock! Horror! Michelle Obama wore British designs earlier this week for a state visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao. Some Americans it seems believe the First Lady should be sticking strictly to wearing home-grown design talent. Of course when the visit was designed to promote American-Chinese trade it was an ideal opportunity to showcase American designs. Notwithstanding this it is almost certain that the White House photographer sported a Japanese camera and they drank French champagne at the State Dinner.

Pride in one’s country is very special, but we also need to recognise we live in a global world - something we know all too well on this Blog. Unfortunately patriotism is also often exploited by the unscrupulous and those with a vested interest, such as the American designer who criticised Michelle Obama. George Bush was very successful in branding anyone who didn’t agree with him as unpatriotic and as we saw earlier in the week Martin Luther King was distinctly unpatriotic in attacking the American way of life. Perhaps Michelle Obama should be allowed to wear what she feels good in? (Typed by an English girl on an American-designed Apple computer made in Taiwan)
