A poem that opened my eyes

Happy New Year Everyone. A prosperous, happy and most importantly a healthy 2011 for all.

Last week, while working a triage shift during a horrendous snow storm, an addict came in and handed me this poem on a crumpled piece of paper and begged for help. She made such an impression on me that I wanted to share the poem.( not sure of source, but some say an addict while many attribute to a Peter Wimbrow:

The Girl In The Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for self, and the world makes you queen for a day,

Just go to the mirror and look at yourself, and see what that girl has to say.

For it isn't your father or mother or wife, whose judgement upon you must pass.

The lady whose verdict counts most in your life is the one staring back from the glass.

Some people may think your a straight shooting chum and call you whats a wonderful lie.

But the girl in the glass says you're only a bum, if you can't look her straight in the eye.

She's the girl you must please, never mind all the rest, for she's with you clear up to the end.

And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test, if the girl in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of life, and get pats on the back as you pass.

But your final reward will be heartaches and tears, if you've cheated the girl in the glass.

Awesome poem Sammie. Kinda reminds me of a monologue I once heard at a spoken word open mic night.

So what happened to the woman? the addict you helped?

I agree, a thought provoking poem, unfortunately the powers of self analysis are all but lost these days.

Happy New Year Sammie.

Nice article Sammie, and Happy new year, and welcome to the blog.I have seen this poem before, but it's message is timeless, and timely, too, as we ring in the New Year.

Thanks for posting it.

Happy New Year, Sammie, and thank you for posting this. It is an eye opener, no matter which variation of his poem is used. The fact she was carrying and sharing it is a beautiful sign of optimism and hope. Blessings, ~Camille
