My little bit of the world part III
Well so far you have met the Irish and the Scots. As the Irish have large immigrant populations in the USA and the Scots in Canada you may already be familiar with some aspects of their respective cultures. Perhaps less well known to those over The Pond are the Welsh. As you will see today, the Welsh have quite different accents to the Irish and the Scots. An accent best described as musical and as we will see they are great singers. What the Irish, Scots and Welsh all have in common is that they are basically Celtic nations and to this day they all still have their own languages (which have many similarities). The Celts were the original inhabitants of these islands, but when the Anglo-Saxons arrived from the continent they took the good land and drove the Celts back into the mountainous extremities of Scotland and Wales where they can still be found to-day. With gene profiling it is possible to see that genetically the average English person has little in common with the Welsh or Scots and in fact more in common with the Dutch and Germans. Not surprisingly the Welsh, Scots and Irish hate the English (in fact everyone hates the English but more of that later)
As already indicated Wales is largely mountainous. The mountains are found mainly in the North and historically the south has been dominated by industries such a coal mining. An industry Margaret Thatcher cynically destroyed leaving large swathes of the country jobless with no viable short term alternatives.
Deep coal mining in narrow seams is a wretched job and the Welsh miners have had to confront many heart-breaking tragedies. None more so than when back in the Sixties a mining tip slid and engulfed a school full of children.
As already indicated they are great singers. You may remember them the film Zulu.
And of course they have one the finest national anthems in the world:
There is one thing however beyond dispute. Their women are HAWT!

You say their women are lovely and you're right about Catherine Z J but....... she isn't typical xxx
Cymru Am Byth - Wales Forever! Not a bad pencil portrtait of Wales for a Yorkshirewoman Saffron. I'm afraid the memories of Pantglas Junior School always bring tears to my eyes. One hundred and sixteen children died that day.
Oh isn't she indeed Monica? :P
Well now, Sam - if she were typical wouldn't I be on the next bus to Wales???????
Another great article,On the Welch, this time. I do have to make a correction though,Saffy. It is not true everyone hates the English. I for one, love English Muffins. No pun Intended. << grins >>
I want Catherine Zeta Jones and you may have the rest of the country. Thank you very much.
Sobbing. I've known of many but not these particular mining tragedies. A very somber video, Saffron. Will sit quietly with this for a spell and return a bit later to view the rest of your presentation.
It is bad enough, the difficult work endured by those, who provide the energy sources,of industry. They also have endured the heartache of mining disasters, the world over.
It is all that much worse, when Innocent children pay that terrible price. Thanks for the sobering reminder reminder Saffy, and remembering them.
