More Great Guitarists

It's always fun, to see videos, and such, that people post. With great interest, I have looked at a variety of video's posted by Camille, Dan, and Liss, Jenny, and others. It can be great fun to dig into the album trunk, and dig out something from years past. While the music i pulled out Isn't nearly as old as that performed by Jimi Hendrix, It's still some of the best written. I looked through some of the Albums, CD's, and music, that inspired me to pick up a guitar, and other instruments, and my playing equally inspired my many music teachers to develop a healthy drinking habit, and seek out professional counseling.

One such artist, and influence is Joe Satriani. Perhaps not as widely known, outside guitar playing circles, Joe is nonetheless widely acclaimed as one of the best guitarists, drawing from such diverse backgrounds, as Jazz, and blues. Like a painter, who uses a canvas, Joe through intricate harmonies and phrasing, and incredible composition, creates tonal landscapes, that easily flow through ones consciousness. If anyone has seen the movie " Top-gun " the incredible guitar work is all Joe Satriani.

Satriani's gift is creating highly evolved instrumental music, using the structure of popular standard songs that allows listeners to latch onto tuneful melodies before being dazzled by his acclaimed musicianship. His hallmarks are a warm, bluesy tone and delicate phrasing, combined with the bursts of superhuman technical facility which upped the ante well beyond the standards set by generations of great rock musicians before him.

Of interest to Saffy, Joe began a 10-year guitar teaching career with students including David Bryson (Counting Crows), Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Larry LaLonde (Primus), and Charlie Hunter, among others. Saffy has always liked Metallica. Currently , Joe has joined up with former Van Halen Bassist Michael Anthony, and others, In a band called Chickenfoot. Odd name, I know. They played a short number of dates, on tour, to test fan reaction. The reviews of these performances has been very positive.

I wanted to leave these videos, as entry into the theme of great guitarists. This song is aptly named, " crying "

This song showcases Joe's Incredible Jazz influences, and is simply called, " thinking of you " I call it beautiful.

This song is entitled simply " alone " and showcases Joe's Blues influence. It's slow driving, seductive drumming, and intricate bass lines, and flowing structure, are all hallmarks of Joe Satriani , and his bands playing. I hope you enjoy this collection

I've got one for you Nicky... but I'll wait till I haven't been posting so much. You'll love him. Did you see that girl I posted for Saffy a few months back? I actually was dragged to a show of his once, and I ended up really liking it. I thought it was going to be three hours of guitar-masturbation, and it turns out he plays some really pretty songs.

Joe Satriani is not just a virtuoso, but probably the most technically advanced rock guitarist in the world. For aspiring guitarists he is a veritable master class when it comes to legato, two-handed and arpeggio tapping, volume swells, harmonics, and extreme whammy bar effects. His legato technique achieved through hammer-ons and pull-offs) yields unbelievably smooth flowing runs and in ‘Crying’ his guitar literally cries.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I hope you liked the music, and a little bit of background on Joe.

I thought you might like this Liss, as you have varied tastes in music, and like good guitar work. I am glad you got to see him in concert. I look forward to more music posts from you.

Being a guitar player yourself, saffy, I thought this might expand your repertoire. Glad you liked the music. One of the very best.

Lauren, It's easy to feel the music, when you have inspiration, from awesome people around you, and you are the best.

Thanks for letting me share this with all of you.
