My Dearest,
Dost thou take my words
Smooth as Lambrusco wine,
Or dost thou take them penned
Of dirt, like filthy swine?
And dost thy heart beat slow
From breasts a babe would suck,
Or dost thou thy heart beat fast
No patience for ill luck?
Oh, can’st thou tell the difference
That what ‘could be’ should be?
Or hast thou lost the touch,
That love hath brought from me?
And can’st thou still recall
The glow and lovely shine,
‘Twas placed upon your face
The hands of magic, mine?
Whil’st I, and thou, and time
Were an undivided world,
Fate ‘twas so good and kind
Then suddenly it swirled…
And God ‘twas right behind
To leave a message clear:
A test put to us both,
With passage of one year.
One quarter of it gone
Three quarters left to go,
So many dusks and dawns
Before we both shall know.
But Angel, can’st thou see
Through sentimental eyes,
Our love ‘twas meant to be
To last throughout our lives?
A stranger in our midst
To bear the fruit of lies,
With beauty the intent
Of making our truth die…
I’ll toss aside my pride
To beg and plead sincere,
The ocean by my side
‘Tis but one salty tear.
I pray my darling, dear
That caution mark thy lips
So they may not caress
One who takes evil steps,
To lead thy heart astray
Untie our special bind
Within thy gentle soul
And in thy precious mind.
