Bits and Pieces taken from an article, not my own words:
The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake triggered a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed for hours by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them more than magnitude 6.0. In the early hours of Saturday, a magnitude-6.7 earthquake struck the central, mountainous part of the country — far from the original quake's epicenter. It was not immediately clear if this latest quake was related to the others.
Friday's massive quake shook dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coast, including Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter. A large section of Kesennuma, a town of 70,000 people in Miyagi, burned furiously into the night with no apparent hope of being extinguished, public broadcaster NHK said.
Also, the first waves hit Hawaii about 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT). A tsunami about 7 feet (2.1 meters) high was recorded on Maui and a wave at least 3 feet (a meter) high was recorded on Oahu and Kauai. Officials warned that the waves would continue and could get larger.
An 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Northeast Japan spawned a ferocious tsunami that's caused massive destruction; flattening whole cities, starting raging fires, and killing hundreds.
But NHK, also citing police, said at least 388 people were confirmed dead and more than 700 were missing across several prefectures.Kyodo predicted the death toll would surpass 1,000.The news agency, citing Japan's defense forces, also said 60,000 to 70,000 people were being evacuated to shelters in the Sendai area of Miyagi Prefecture.

I was just reading about this Jasmin, and it's heartbreaking. No matter how bad we think we have it, stories like these are a somber reminder things can always be worse. That we must be more cognizant and grateful for what is going well in our life, rather than concentrating on things we have little to no control over. Thank you for sharing this, Jas.
Yeah dude, I'm in shock. How was the cali area?
some boats out on the coast have been totaled but nothing too bad at all
In a way we have become inured to disasters by the press who have flogged the word ‘devastation’ to the point where it becomes meaningless. Then something of this scale comes along and it becomes difficult to grasp the magnitude of what has happened. My heart and thoughts go out to the people of Japan.
I share those sentiments,as well. unfortunately, it may get worse as just north of Tokyo, their nuclear power plants are showing signs of a meltdown, and radiation levels there are incredibly high, triggering an evacuation.
It seems the Tectonic plates are on the move, as New Zealand has also suffered a major Earth quake. The " pacific rim " those that share a border with the Pacific Ocean, are all at an increased risk for Earthquakes, and geological phenomena.
Lets hope they have the strength we know they do to recover from this.
